I walk into the rain
On nostalgic days of dim.
As soon as the trumpet plays,
My feet begin to skim
The puddles of the schoolyard
That catch pouring tears.
Then from the open grounds
Return imagined fears.
They unearth feelings of abandonment,
And past anxieties that I recall.
I wish to atone for missteps
I made in the rainfall.
But wish as I might,
My loneliness is immutable
Since the body’s all grown up
And the mind is juvenile.
